The Structural Conservation of Ruins: Structural assessment of ruined masonry walls - Part 2

Ruined structures form an important part of our architectural and cultural heritage. Today, these structures are conserved, preserved and maintained as ruins to be visited. David has authored a chapter on the structural behaviour of masonry constructed from lime mortar which will be published in the upcoming guidance document on the structural conservation of ruins. This session will examine the engineering properties of lime mortar and unpick how this translates into the structural behaviour of the masonry composite. David will aim to dispel some persistent myths about the strength of historic masonry.

Balancing risk, safety and care: A case study on removing asbestos from historic brickwork

This webinar focuses on the gaps in typically accepted practice for surveying, testing and removing asbestos from historic buildings, analysing how the assumptions in asbestos refurbishment surveys contribute to risk. It seeks to explain the strategy developed to address this risk at Tone Works, with a focus on asbestos in the historic brickwork. The webinar describes the options tested for removing the asbestos, whilst finding a balance between health and safety requirements and the conservation of historic fabric.

Fire can cause devastating and irreversible damage to historic buildings, their contents and significance. This webinar introduces Historic England’s updated online fire safety advice for owners, managers, occupiers and fire safety professionals working with heritage buildings. It will explore practical approaches to reducing fire risk while balancing life safety requirements with the need to protect historic fabric and character. Topics will include fire detection and alarm systems, emergency planning, liaison with Fire and Rescue Services, fire strategies, fire doors and sympathetic fire safety interventions. The session will also highlight where to find Historic England guidance, resources and specialist advice online.
