We fund projects in response to specific calls for proposals that directly address the priorities outlined in Historic England's Strategic Plan.

Calls for proposals
Aerial investigation and mapping to enhance local authority HERs and address research agendas
We invite organisations to apply for funding to undertake archaeological surveys using aerial photographs and lidar to improve Historic Environment Records (HERs), address regional research priorities, and support the protection and management of England’s historic environment. Projects should focus on areas where heritage faces significant pressures from development, landscape change, climate change or gaps in archaeological knowledge.
Proposals must demonstrate how they will contribute to the priorities of Growth, Place and Sector as set out in Historic England’s Strategic Plan 2026-2031 and adhere to Historic England’s Standards and Guidance for Aerial Investigation and Mapping Projects.
Proposals must be submitted to HPCPCalls@HistoricEngland.org.uk by 14 September 2026.
Neighbourhood Heritage: Grants for Communities
Historic England invites applications for Neighbourhood Heritage: Grants for Communities supporting community-led projects that use heritage to help people understand, influence and shape the future of their local places.
We are interested in funding projects that enable communities to explore what they value about their neighbourhoods and use this understanding to inform local priorities, strengthen community voice and contribute to place-shaping activity.
This programme is not funding heritage activity for its own sake. We are looking for projects that use heritage as a tool to support community leadership, local influence, inclusion and community-led change.
Projects must be delivered between March 2027 and August 2028. Approximately 21 grants of up to £15,000 will be awarded.
Proposals must be submitted by 23:59 on Friday, 27 November 2026
Data Supply and Reconciliation between the National Record of the Historic Environment and Historic Environment Records
We are receiving applications for grants of up to 50% from local authorities, or partnerships led by a local authority, wishing to take part in the transfer and reconciliation of the terrestrial component of the National Record of the Historic Environment (NRHE) with their local Historic Environment Records (HERs).
The strategic plan priority that these projects link to is Sector. The outcome we are looking to achieve is that the sector is effective, innovative and equipped with the knowledge, skills, evidence base and infrastructure needed for success.
Closing date for applications: This is an open call and we are still receiving applications.
