Historic England’s grants play an important role in helping people care for, enjoy and celebrate England’s spectacular historic environment.

We have three core funding activities: ‘Places’, ‘People’, and ‘Research’. Applications can be made for core activity projects at any time.
Places
Activities that repair, conserve and care for historic assets, including buildings, structures, monuments, landscapes and areas.
People
Activities that help people understand and champion the historic environment, including skills and training, education, community engagement and outreach, and in some cases time-limited posts.
Research
Activities that improve knowledge, understanding and management of the historic environment including investigation, surveys, toolkits, guidance and the dissemination of grant-funded research.
In addition to our core activities, we sometimes have targeted grant programmes which have their own separate eligibility criteria. These grant programmes have time-limited application windows.
Periodically, Historic England may also invite (call for) proposals for projects which have a specific focus, or which involve themes that are outside our usual core funding activities. Applications can be made while the ‘call’ is live.
