Updating the List
With over 400,000 entries on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE), many of which are over 20 years old, we realise there may be minor errors.
On this page, you can find out how to request minor amendments and how we process them.
What counts as a minor amendment?
We have a fast-track correction process for small errors in List entries. We refer to these straightforward changes as 'minor amendments'.
Examples of minor amendments include:
- Updating or correcting the spelling of a building name
- Correcting building numbers
- Updating street or road names
- Small corrections to the List entry description, such as spelling and grammatical errors or factual inaccuracies
- Correcting the mapping of listed building points
In all cases, we can easily amend typing errors.
What doesn’t count as a minor amendment?
- Changes to the grade or status of a List entry
- Amendments to the location where an asset has been moved or where there is ambiguity as to the asset's location
- Amendments to clarify the extent of listing
Changes that cannot be treated as a minor amendment may require a formal amendment, and you may need to complete our online application form.
We can then conduct fuller re-assessments where they meet one of our current priorities, or you can apply for a listing enhancement through our charged-for Enhanced Advisory Services.
You can add information to a List entry in other ways too, which may be more appropriate than a minor amendment. The Missing Pieces Project invites people to share their pictures and stories of the unique, significant and memorable places on the National Heritage List for England.
There are over 400,000 protected places across England to discover. The Missing Pieces Project is all about uncovering their hidden histories and revealing overlooked stories.
Please note that the Missing Pieces project should not be used to notify us of amendments to List entries. Where amendments are needed for listings, use the minor amendments process described below.
How to request a minor amendment
If you do not have a Historic England account, you'll find it quick and easy to create an account. Then, to request a minor amendment to a List entry, use our online minor amendments request form.
You will need to include:
- The List entry number
- Any relevant information supporting your request, such as photographs or copies of documents
We will notify you and any interested parties when we make amendments. Changes are made directly to the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) and appear online within 24 hours.
List entries are legal documents, and we keep a record of all requests that lead to an amendment. We will keep your contact details for 1 year only.
Please note, we cannot make minor amendments to the protected areas of scheduled monuments, registered parks and gardens, registered battlefields, protected wreck sites or World Heritage Site entries. To request an amendment to those, please complete our online application form.
