Summary
A First World War memorial erected in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War.
Reasons for Designation
Biggin-by-Hartington War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
Historic interest:
* as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20.
Architectural interest:
* as an example of a well-carved obelisk.
History
The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore, the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised at Biggin-by-Hartington, Derbyshire as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the eight members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.
The memorial is located at the junction between Main Street and Drury Lane, close to the Church of St Thomas. It sits at the centre of a small, triangular garden surrounded by a low rubble stone wall and stone paving. The entrance to the garden is to the north-west of the memorial and is flanked by stone piers. The memorial is believed to have been erected in 1921.
An additional inscription to honour the four parishioners who fell during the Second World War was subsequently added.
