About Heritage Gateway

The Heritage Gateway provides access to summary records from national and local Historic Environment Records (HERs). You can use it to search across datasets and gain an overview of England’s historic environment in one place.  

The original Heritage Gateway website was launched nearly 20 years ago by Historic England in partnership with the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and the Association of Local Government Archaeological Officers.  

On 16 September 2026 we launched a new Heritage Gateway, replacing the old platform. The new site offers significantly improved data quality and new features, including a much-improved map search and display.

Many datasets are already available on the new Heritage Gateway. We are onboarding the full range of datasets in phases over the coming months, and we're working closely with our partners throughout this process. See which datasets are not yet available.
