Energy Efficiency and Decarbonisation Case Study: Keelmen’s Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne
This case study focuses on the decision-making process during the project's design phase to repair and reuse Keelmen’s Hospital to accommodate affordable flats.
It demonstrates how energy efficiency and decarbonisation goals can be balanced with the protection and enhancement of heritage significance while meeting statutory requirements.
We hope this case study helps practitioners, conservation and sustainability specialists, and building owners and managers understand how instrumental a whole-building approach is in delivering a tailored, quality, and successful repair and reuse project.
Historic England’s case studies
Historic England is collating a suite of case studies on energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and climate resilience. These case studies are part of an ongoing dialogue on the reuse and adaptation of historic and traditional buildings, as well as on the adaptation of the historic environment to climate change risks. They should not be seen as advice, specifications, or recommendations, but rather as unique responses to a particular project.
We hope the case studies demonstrate examples of decision-making processes that follow an evidence-led approach to interventions.
Historic England is grateful to all the partners who have been willing to put forward a case study. Please remember, a perfect project does not exist.
