Description

Two albums containing 224 photographs showing general views, street scenes, houses, farm buildings, mills, town and market halls and cottages in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. There is good coverage of building details such as chimneys, shop fronts, doorways, inn signs and cupolas. The albums include some picturesque photographs with children etc. Photographs taken c1890 to 1910.

Archival History

The albums were donated by Michael Marshman of Trowbridge Reference Library on 20/10/1997

Provenance : Ralph Whitlock was a respected writer on rural matters; b.1914 d.1995. Mr Whitlock bequeathed his collection to the library on his death, so that his library and writings would remain in one place. Wiltshire were allowed to transfer parts of the collection which did not directly relate to his work or his collection. The photographs almost certainly were not taken by anyone in his family. The albums were probably given to him because of his reputation as a writer. The initials W G D appear on a reference to publishing rights. The collection file includes his obituary from Wiltshire Life magazine, by John Chandler, and biographical information.
