Further information and updates A collection of 203 black and white negatives and 9 original prints associated with the silversmiths JW Evans. The images include views of the business and its products as well as the Evans family along with their friends, relatives and associates. The photographs were taken between about 1900 and 1920.
The collection has been subdivided into the following series:
JWE01 (Negatives): Including views of pressings and finished items manufactured by J W Evans including tableware, grooming products, candlesticks, decorative items etc.; interior and exterior views of the factory with and without workers; members of the Church Lads Brigade in uniform, on military exercises, and in fancy dress; members of the Evans family in formal dress and fancy dress; a group of people posed in a car (friends/relatives of the Evans family); clocks associated with Gus Fowler, the magician and illusionist.
JWE02 (Original photographic prints without associated negatives): Including examples of items produced by the company and dies used to manufacture the finished products.
JWE03 (Miscellaneous): A newspaper article and an envelope with the sillouhette of a head and shoulders cut into the envelope to form a stencil, probably used as a mask for blanking part of a photograph during processing.
All have been digitised. A handlist is available.
The collection was acquired by the NMR in 2009 after English Heritage took over responsibility for the former JW Evans factory in Birmingham.
