What Does Historic England Fund?

Historic England’s grants play an important role in helping people care for, enjoy and celebrate England’s spectacular historic environment.

What we fund

We provide grants for the following types of activity:

  • Places

Activities that repair, conserve and care for historic assets, including buildings, structures, monuments, landscapes and areas.

  • People

Activities that help people understand and champion the historic environment, including skills and training, education, community engagement and outreach, and in some cases time-limited posts.

  • Research

Activities that improve knowledge, understanding and management of the historic environment, including surveys, toolkits, guidance and publications.

Other opportunities

  • Grant Calls for Proposals

We also fund projects in response to specific calls for proposals. The subject of each call is pre-defined and new calls may be added throughout the year.

  • Tendered Opportunities

We also advertise tendered projects with very specific project requirements. New opportunities may be offered throughout the year, so please check regularly.

  • Grants for War Memorials

Historic England now funds War Memorials Trust to provide grants for war memorials. Find out how to apply.
