How To Apply

A step-by-step guide on how to apply for a Historic England Grant.

What do we fund?

We fund projects of all sizes that care for England's heritage. Before you get started, find out more about what we fund.

Check you are eligible

First, check that the activity you need funding for meets our eligibility criteria to apply.

This includes meeting one or more of our grant priorities.

Whilst we recommend you look over this guidance, we do not expect you to be an expert in the detail of what we do and do not fund. The first step in applying is to send us an expression of interest (EOI), which you do through an online form.

Filling out the EOI form will help both you and Historic England decide whether your project is suitable to be invited to make a full application.

Submit an expression of interest (EOI)

Our EOI is a simple online form that takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Before you start, you’ll need to set up a Historic England Account, if you do not already have an account. This is quick and easy to do and will allow you to submit as many applications as you like.

Some of the key information we’ll ask you about includes:

  • Your project’s aims
  • The change and benefits you think your project will bring
  • Roughly how much it will cost
  • Roughly when your project will start and finish
  • Why you think Historic England should support your project

We also recommend following our guidance on how to complete your EOI.

Learn how to complete an EOI

If we think your project is something we would like to consider for funding, we will invite you to make a full application.

If you’re unable to use an online form, please contact us at  GrantsBusinessImprovement@historicengland.org.uk to arrange a phone call where we can work through your submission verbally.

Local authorities only

Before starting an EOI, local authorities applying for Partnership Schemes in Conservation Areas need to let their local Historic England office know they are planning to apply. Contact your local Historic England  office

Submit a full application

If your EOI is successful you will receive an invitation by email to submit a full grant application.

On average it will take us up to 6 weeks to review your EOI and let you know if you are being invited to apply.

If we decide we are not going to invite you to apply, we will let you know by email and explain why. Our decision is final and there is no right of appeal.

If we do invite you to apply you will receive an email from us with instructions on what to do next, a web link to the application form and any guidance you need to follow to help you make the best application.
