Historic England Supports New Home for Cornwall's Oldest Boxing Club
Historic England is supporting revised plans for Camborne and Redruth Amateur Boxing Club's new home near Dolcoath in Cornwall.
We’re delighted to support this sensitively designed proposal for all the benefits it will bring, from its positive contribution to the World Heritage Site to the health and wellbeing of the local community.
The new building, designed by Create Design South West, will replace the existing venue, which dates to the early 1940s, with a new facility for the club and the wider community.
Historic England has welcomed the proposed redevelopment of the site as an opportunity to enhance the area and better reveal its important mining heritage.
This building will be a game-changer for Camborne. Working with Create Design and Historic England, we are creating a sustainable legacy. We are providing our youth with a safe, inspiring space they can be truly proud of.
Our club has a rich heritage of its own, and its new home in a building designed to reflect the wider industrial spirit of the area honours where we’ve come from.
The development site lies within the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, close to the former Dolcoath mine, the deepest and the richest in the county, once known as “the Queen of Cornish mines.”
Two structures which embody this mining legacy- a Grade II listed Compressor House and Chimney and a Grade II listed Engine House - lie close to the boxing club site.
The design and proposed use of materials for the new building relate well to these buildings and make a positive contribution to the area's historic character.
Great architecture not only harmonises with the context of the World Heritage Site and history of mining, but shapes a new building providing Camborne and Redruth Amateur Boxing Club with a quality environment for trainers, ringside shows and community groups.
