National Heritage List for England Survey
Historic England is a public body that helps people care for, enjoy and celebrate England's spectacular historic environment. They protect, champion and save the places that define who we are and where we've come from as a nation. they care passionately about the stories they tell, the ideas they represent and the people who live, work and play among them.
Part of Historic England’s role is administering the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) on behalf of the government. The NHLE is the only official, up to date, register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England of special archaeological, architectural or historic interest. This includes listed buildings, scheduled monuments, protected wrecks, registered parks and gardens, and battlefields.
What is this engagement about?
This engagement is an important step towards a new strategy for the List. As we are developing the draft strategy, we have been speaking to stakeholders to understand more about people’s priorities for the List. As part of this engagement, we are keen to hear from a wide range of people, including those who might not typically get involved in our consultations.
In recent times there has been a growing recognition that heritage is not just about historic monuments, buildings and sites, but is about the identity and character of places, and how people and communities associate and connect with them. Historic England wants to ensure that the List better reflects this and enables people to protect what is important to them about the places they value.
What is the National Heritage List for England (the List)?
The List is the only official, up to date, register of all nationally protected historic buildings and sites in England. This includes:
- listed buildings
- scheduled monuments
- protected wrecks
- registered parks and gardens
- battlefields
It is a key tool in the management of the built environment, helping to ensure that the special buildings and sites which are important to communities are protected and change is effectively managed.
We want to ensure that the List more accurately reflects what is important to you by hearing more about your priorities. This will help us to shape our strategy for the future of the List.
How can I get involved?
You can get involved by filling in the survey.
You can also register to attend our online sessions if you live in Boston, the Isle of Wight or Leeds. Please keep reading for more information!
Sign up to our online workshops
Do you live in Boston, Leeds or the Isle of Wight? We are hosting online workshops in these three areas and would love to see you there. If you are interested in attending, please register your interest and we will contact you with more information.
No prior knowledge about Historic England or listing is required to take part in the workshops. As part of the sign-up survey, we do have a few questions so we can tailor the online workshops.
What happens next?
After we have received feedback through our online sessions and this page on the website, we will take some time to analyse it. This feedback will then inform our strategy for the List, which we will be drafting over the coming weeks. We will be further consulting on the draft strategy at that stage, in addition to this specific engagement exercise.
